Activities with full instructions
Activity 1: Play shuffleboard
Forget the table shuffleboard that takes up all the space at your local bar. This activity is taking you straight to the legit retirement home shuffleboard court. Or, rather, the mini shuffleboard court that you are going to make right in your living room!
What you need for this activity
- Painter’s or masking tape
- Mop or broom
- 8 aluminum jar lids, round Tupperware lids, or similar household item (all same size, and preferably in 2 distinguishable colors)
Instructions
- Find a spot to set up your shuffleboard court. This should ideally be a spot in your house that has a smooth, flat surface (like wooden or tiled floors) and enough space to play. See “Modifications” below if you are limited on floor space.
- Use your tape to make the following triangle shape on the floor. The tip of the triangle should be pointing toward where you will be standing. Make your shape as large or as small as you have space for – even small courts are fun, if not a little more challenging!
- Put one more line of tape down that marks where you will be standing and shooting from.
- Put your pucks (lids or whatever you choose to use) on your shooting line separated by color. You should each have 4 pucks.
- Take turns shooting your pucks by pushing them with your mop or broom. You can knock each other’s pucks out of play or aim for getting the most points.
- The points are awarded for each zone as follows:
- You score points for each of your pucks that you have in a section.
- Pucks/points do not cancel each other out. If you have 2 pucks, one in the 8 point section and one in the 7 point section, you get 15 points. If your partner has pucks in the same 2 sections, they also get 15 points.
- In “real” shuffleboard, your pucks have to be 100% within a section in order for the points to count. We modify the game to say that you can still get points if your puck is on the line. Score your points for the section that the majority of the puck is in.
- The first player to get 100 points wins!
- In “real” shuffleboard, you must get exactly 100 points to be declared in the winner, but for our game we just say it’s the first player to get 100 points or more.
- Check below to see what the winner gets as a prize!
Modifications
If you don’t have space to play on your floor, you can play a mini version on a table using bottle caps or other smaller objects as your pucks. Instead of using a broom or mop, just use your hands to push your pucks!
Prize
The winner gets 5 “You Do Its” – AKA if there is a chore or childcare activity that the winner doesn’t want to do (think dirty diapers or folding laundry), the winner gets to designate that the losing partner has to take that task. And they get to do it 5 times!
Activity 2: Do a puzzle
Normally a very calming activity, we up the stakes on your normal puzzle-making. Can you and your partner work together to beat the clock?
What you need for this activity
Instructions
- Remove the puzzles from their boxes and blend the pieces together in one pile.
- Start a timer for 40 minutes.
- Put the two puzzles together using whichever strategy the two of you work out together. See if you can put both puzzles together before the timer goes off!

What you need for this activity
Instructions
Choose your prizes or punishments for the winner and loser of your game. Here are some suggestions!

- Each player randomly chooses 3 Bingo scorecards.
- Alternate taking turns calling the Bingo numbers. Mark the called numbers that you have on all of your 3 cards.
- For example if B7 is called and you have it on 2 of your cards, mark B7 on both cards.
- Follow the special additional instructions below
- If you are using a traditional American Bingo game that includes the BINGO letters on your cards, use the Rules for BINGO with letters and numbers. If you are using the version common in other countries that includes only numbers on your scorecards, use the Rules for BINGO with just numbers.
- Each of the quick actions recommended in the additional instructions only need to be done once per partner per turn, even if you are able to mark more than one of your Bingo cards.
- For example if you have B7 on your 2 of your 3 cards and there is an action you must do based on the additional rules, you only need to do that action once for that turn even though you have 2 B7s.
- You score a BINGO for completing an entire row on one of your scorecards, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
- If you are using a Bingo game with just numbers instead of the Bingo letters, follow the instructions included with your game to determine what makes a BINGO.
- The winner of the game is the first player to get 3 BINGOs across any of their 3 scorecards.
- The BINGOs can be on 3 different cards, all on the same card, or split in any other combination across the 3 cards.
