Activities with full instructions
Activity 1: Make a money bowl
The money bowl is a concept from the ancient Chinese Feng Shui that is supposed to attract prosperity, wealth, and abundance to your home.
By having a bowl of treasures always on display in your home, you will boost the wealth energy in your home and be inspired to manifest more money into your life.
Now, we aren’t saying that we really buy this. But if there’s any chance at all that it does something positive and it makes for a fun activity, why not?!
In this activity you will be putting together your own feng shui money bowl to keep on display in your home.
Ideally your money bowl should contain crystals, laughing buddha statues, and the color purple, but we are going for a simplified version.
If all of this is total baloney, then at the very least you and your partner will get a good giggle at the silliness and a cool new place to store your loose coins!
And the best scenario? You manifest so much luck and wealth energy that you win the lottery!
What you need for this activity
- A bowl (cereal bowl sized), preferably one that is pretty enough to leave out on display and not see-through
- Uncooked rice (optional)
- 2 cinnamon sticks (optional)
- 2 bay leaves
- Loose change/coins
- Pen
Instructions
- If you are using rice, fill the bottom of your money bowl with a layer of rice. Rice is a symbol of luck, success, and good health which creates the base of your bowl.
- Add your next layer of loose change and coins. This represents the money that is coming to you and your family by boosting your wealth energy!
- Add your cinnamon sticks (if you so wish) which also are believed to manifest good luck and prosperity.
- Give each partner a bay leaf and a pen. Write a short “money affirmation” on each of your bay leaves, and then add them to your bowl.
- Example affirmations:
- We attract wealth and abundance.
- Money comes our way everyday.
- We are gonna be rich!
- Example affirmations:
- Place your money bowl in the farthest left corner of a highly-trafficked room of your home, like the living room. Do not place your bowl anywhere near a sink or somewhere with running water, as this represents the draining of your wealth.
- Congratulations! You’ve just made your home lucky just in time for playing the lottery.
Activity 2: Scratch and win
Scratch lottery tickets may not quite get you to the lap of luxury level that a $350 million Power Ball would, but your chances of winning something are much higher and scratching is a lot of fun!
This activity will provide mini challenges for you and your partner to do while you are shopping with your lottery winnings (Activity 3). The winner of each challenge gets the honor of scratching one of the tickets!
What you need for this activity
- 5 scratch lottery tickets, 4 in the same denomination and 1 larger-value
- Your phones or computer
Instructions
For each challenge, each partner will need their phone or access to a computer.
Do the activities one at a time throughout your lottery shopping (the next activity) or do them all at once before moving on.
Challenge 1 – 4
- Set a timer for 1 minute.
- Open the first challenge tab below and follow the game instructions.
- The winner gets to scratch one of the 4 lower-denomination lottery tickets.
- Repeat for each of the first 4 challenges.
Challenge 5
- Set a timer for 10 minutes.
- Open the last challenge tab and follow the game instructions.
- The winner gets to scratch the higher denomination lottery ticket.
Challenges
Challenge 1
Go to zillow.com. You have one minute to find the most expensive house (note house, not apartment or other form of residence) you can on Zillow. The winner is the partner that has found the most expensive house before the timer goes off.
Confirm that you both are on Zillow’s homepage.
Start your 1-minute timer now!
Challenge 2
Using any websites you want, find the most expensive pair of shoes that you can purchase online (there must be a product page where you can add the product to a cart, not just a picture or article). The winner is the partner that has found the most expensive pair of shoes before the timer goes off.

Challenge 3
Using any websites you want, find the most expensive dog for purchase that you can. This must be a live advertisement with dogs/puppies for sale. The winner is the partner that has found the most expensive dog before the timer goes off.

Challenge 4
Go to cars.com. You have one minute to find the most expensive car you can on cars.com. The winner is the partner that has found the most expensive car before the timer goes off.

Challenge 5
You each have an imaginary $100,000 to spend online in 10 minutes. You must find 5 (and only 5) different things that you would purchase with your money, and your things CANNOT be a house, shoes, a dog, or a car. All of the things that you “purchase” must be actual things that are available to buy (like product pages with shopping carts or live advertisements), not just pictures or articles. The winner is the partner that gets closest to spending all $100,000 without going over and with 5 completely different things (not just different colors, for example).

Activity 3: Spend your fortune
You and your partner have just won the latest Power Ball lottery for $350 million. How are you going to spend your newfound riches?
What you need for this activity
- Your phones or computer
Instructions
This is a very “free” activity in which you and your partner can spend your time shopping online for homes, boats, cars, and whatever else you can imagine. Check out the guided prompts below to inspire your shopping and help you really think outside the box!
Shopping Inspiration
Houses
Use Zillow to find your dream home in the US. Maybe you want a beachfront mansion in Hawaii or a penthouse apartment in New York City (or both)!
Check out local real estate websites for your country of residence, or try googling Tuscan villas, historic Parisian apartments, luxury Dubai condos, or any other type of property anywhere around the world that interests you.
Cars
What dream vehicles would you buy? Are you going with super swanky sports cars, cool and modern electric cars, giant SUVS, or are you sticking with your practical mini-van?
Vacations
What’s the dream money-isn’t-an-issue vacation? Are you staying in the most luxurious hotels in the ritziest cities around the world, taking a month to backpack through Patagonia, or staying in an underwater bungalow in the Maldives? Would it be just the two of you or would you also take your kids or your extended family or friends?
“Toys”
Boys love their toys! And OK girls do, too.
Would you buy a yacht? Private jet? Gigantic stereo system? ATVs? The ultimate gaming computer set-up? A giant screen TV? All of the above? See if you can find your dream “toys” during your shopping.
Giving back
What charities would you donate to? Would you start a scholarship fund? Would you start your own charitable organization?
Projects
Would you use your money to get involved in other projects?
What sport’s team would you want to own? Would you contribute to political campaigns or lobby for any issues? Would you invest in real estate? Would you invest in a super cool start-up company?
Hobbies and activities
Which hobbies or activities would you take up or do more often?
Would you learn how to ski from an Olympic gold-medalist? Buy a stable and some horses so you could always go riding? Have court-side season tickets to your favorite basketball team? Would you have a tennis court on your property?
Clothes, shoes, and jewelry
Put together your ultimate closet!
Which limited edition designer sneaks MUST you have? Which designer gown are you wearing down the red carpet? Which watch are you wearing for everyday vs which watch are you wearing when you’re going out?
Other Stuff
Challenge each other to really think outside the box!
Are you going to have a weird collection of something? Are you going to totally pamper your pets? Will your kids get piano lessons from Elton John? Are you taking a trip to space?
Activity 4: Write a gratitude journal
As much fun as it is to dream about all of the crazy stuff you can purchase with your lottery money, don’t forget to be grateful for the great things in your life that you already have!
What you need for this activity
- A notepad and pen
Instructions
- Read the following letter from Dating in Captivity out loud before starting your activity!
Letter
Being in love is like winning the lottery. From the moment you meet, you feel a sense of excitement and anticipation, much like when you buy a lottery ticket and hope for the best.
And just like winning the lottery, falling in love brings unimaginable joy and happiness. You bring light and color into each others’ lives. You feel incredibly fortunate to have each other by your side.
When you are together, anything is possible. Your dreams and desires seem attainable, and there’s a sense of freedom and possibility that you may never have experienced before.
Of course, like any great prize, being in love comes with a sense of responsibility. You need to nurture and care for your relationship, to ensure that it continues to grow and thrive. But with the right amount of care and attention, your love will continue to bring joy and happiness for years to come.
You were incredibly lucky to have found each other. Always cherish and appreciate the love you share. Being together is truly like winning the lottery. Never take that for granted.
- Make a list of all the things that you both are grateful for to have in your lives.
- Take a picture together to post on your social media profile with the caption “We won the lottery!” Remember to tag @datingincaptivity.
